Sluijter Back Garden
This young family wanted some help developing a year-round garden full of
color. They had already contracted with a builder to install the planters as well
as the new tile patio and turf. After consulting with them, the sun and partial
sun planters were increased slightly in size during construction, low-voltage
lighting was added to each planter box and a better soil mix was used for the
health of the plants and to help conserve water.

The concrete block planters each had very different lighting conditions even though they were only meters away from one another. The plants we chose would provide color throughout the year as well as some evergreen interest to help provide structure even during winter. The owner had a few requirements – a topiary tree, plants that would not attract a lot of bees, low-maintenance and a wide variety of colors. We achieved this by using lots of different leaf textures and colors as well as a rotating bloom schedule to ensure blooms throughout the seasons. We provided cohesion between the different lighting situations by using complimentary plantings in each bed to bring them all together. Some plants that were used include; daylily, camellia, clematis, jasmine, euonymous, iris, azaleas, hosta, heuchura, hellebore, astilbe, iberis.

This project was completed within a two-week time period and came in under budget.
